This TV
drama that originally aired on the CW Network adapts the tumultuous and
dramatic life of Mary, Queen of Scots. The show takes place in both France and
Scotland where Mary reigned in her lifetime. The picturesque setting of the show in combination with the modern take on 16th
century fashion goes perfectly with the music choices that are featured.
Approximately 90% of the show’s music choices are related to the
modern folk and indie genres - after watching the first episode it is
made clear what the theme of the show is. The Lumineers sing the opening credit
song and they are a clear favorite as they are often featured numerous times
throughout many seasons of the show.
Other artists featured on the show include
London Grammar, Vance Joy, Milo Greene, Ben Howard, Kodaline, Glass Animals, and
Of Monsters & Men, just to name a few. I was immediately sucked into the show due to the cinematic shots in sync with the thoughtfully placed music. If you decide to watch this show, you will know what I mean. But, for those of you who need further convincing, here is one of my favorite scenes from the 1st episode of the 1st season that features the song "Back to You" by Twin Forks. Mary has just arrived back in France where she had spent her many of her childhood years, to get reacquainted with the future king of France, Francis II - for obvious reasons. What was not expected was their feelings toward each other...or the feelings she might feel for others...
Though the show has ended, all four
seasons are available on Netflix and
feature a ton of great new music, sure to be added to some of your music playlists.
